The Genitive Case and its uses

Endings

Masculine:
add -a OR replace last letter with -Я

Neuter:
add -a OR replace last letter with -Я

Feminine:
replace last letter with -Ы OR -И

Uses:

  1. To signify possession or wherever the English requires 'of' or an apostrophe
  2. Indicating absence (used with Нем)
  3. Used with number 2,3,4 ad any compounds of these numbers other than 12,13,14
  4. Used with the following prepositions
без            -without
до              - around
вокруг      -up to
из              - from
около       - near
от             - from
после         -after
с                - from
нет             -not
напротив   - opposite
далеко       -far
недалеко    - not far
близко        -close/ nearby

Saying 'I have'

There is no verb 'to have' like there is in English, so instead the preposition у is used with the direct object pronoun.

Direct Object Pronouns
Я                                       Меня
Ты                                     Тебя
Он/Она/Оно                      Его/Её/Его
Мы                                    Нас
Вы                                     Вас
Они                                   Их

To say I have: place the preposition 'y' followed by the direct object pronoun followed by есть

у + D.O.C + есть

y Меня есть                       I have
y Тебя есть                        You have
y Его/Её/Его есть              He/She/It has
y Нас есть                          We have
y Вас есть                          You (pl.) have
y Их есть                            They have
